I Know, Right? by phantom-inker I Know, Right? by phantom-inker
I don't have much of a story here. These two girls popped into my head a few days ago, and I just had to draw them.

After a bit of pondering, I concluded that the tall girl is named Meredith, and the short girl is named Beca. I'm not sure what they're talking about, but it looks important.

I liked this enough that they have hands, and even a bit of background. And pretty dresses, and even little details like earrings. It's not only completed lineart, but G-rated too (assuming that centaurs aren't automatically in the PG category, since, after all, Beca isn't wearing pants).

As usual, this was done with CorelDRAW and a mouse, and took probably 20 hours total. I can't decide if I'd like to color this or not. I'm a'feared color might spoil the vibe of the piece.

Hope you like them! Let me know what you think! :-)

Very nice!  As to a story, to me it looks like Meredith is telling Beca about a nightmare she had where she only had two legs that ended int flat, fleshy appendages with short, stubby, finger-like digits.  Beca is shocked by the description.  After all, how could such a strange creature ever exist!  Then again, Beca did warn Mer about her late night snacking and that it could cause strange dreams. 8^)

they're sweet lil' fillies! The one on the right looks a little tomboyish  (and guess what; Beca isn't wearing pants...being a Centaur, she's wearing PRANCE! *rimshot*)

interesting girls. Seems like they have known each other for years, as friends.

I like these outfits. This pic seems to be the beginning of a picturesque fantasy set in Renaissance Europe.

A question about centaur anatomy: how are the organs distributed? In both humans and horses the heart and lungs nestled in the ribcage and followed by the guts below or behind. But with centaurs there's a human torso where the horse's head should be. What do they look like on the inside? Do they have two hearts and four lungs or is everything enlarged and distributed between the two ribcages? This isn't a criticism of your work, which is great by the way. It's just something that's always bugged me about centaurs. I've seen interpretations of both the distributed and duplicated models but I'm not sure I find either entirely satisfying. What do you think?

Also, don't be afraid of coloring it. You'll always have the lineart if the coloring doesn't live up to expectations.

As you're not the first to ask these kinds of questions, I finally got off my duff and started doing a series on Centaur Anatomy! Keep an eye on my gallery, because I'll be covering everything from basic terminology to subtle details about how I see the digestive system working. The first three are already posted, and I hope to do one or two a week until I've covered everything worth covering.

I kinda figured the upper torso was mostly (if not entirely) lungs and heart.
The distance between the lungs and mouth is generally kept short for the sake of efficiency (less air recirculated each breath), and the heart is generally nested in the lungs thanks to the divided structure of the circulatory system. Since the lower torso and rear legs greatly increase the overall mass of the body compared to a human, a significantly larger heart and lungs would be needed to support them, filling the upper torso.
What bugs me the most is the curve of the spine at the transition - artists often draw it as a more or less right angle. Spines aren't supposed to do that like that. >_<

Love the "full body" dress on Meredith. I don't see that kind of centaur wear often enough, even though it's perfectly appropriate.

I like it more in concept than I do how it turned out here. But I do like the concept, and you're right that it's quite appropriate.

The problem is that each hand easily takes as much time as drawing an entire human head. At 45 minutes to an hour per hand, well, that's a lot of effort to spend for most drawings, and the results aren't always all that great: I'm still not convinced of Beca's hands here, although I'm pleased to say that my initial fears of Meredith's were unfounded.

So it's a matter of learning how to make simple, acceptable hands. The 'flippers' you sometimes use are too little, the perfect hands are too much--I so hope you find the balance!

Yeah, I haven't really found a balance I like yet. Proper hands take a lot of work, but the blocky placeholders look pretty ugly. I've debated using mitts in quick work, but those never look all that good either.
