Melanie hadn't been having the best of days. The weather was too hot and sticky, which meant that hiking was definitely not the best way to spend her time, but she wasn't going to waste one of her precious vacation days this week just because the weather was bad. And then there was the stone in her hiking boot and the nasty little blister that grew from it. But at last, things seemed to have gotten better, because high up in these hills she found a hidden spring, cool and refreshing, surrounded by thick undergrowth. Nobody could possibly be around, so she quickly stripped and dove headfirst into the cool, soothing waters. Surfacing on the far side of the pool, though, she saw a furred body trailing out behind her, and then she saw the warning sign buried in the bushes: Her luck was three for three today... but at least the blister was gone.

I asked my fiancée to hunt through some photographs a few days ago and pick one out, because I wanted some artistic inspiration, and she found a picture of a woman walking through the water and suggested that she would look really good as a centaur. Songbird picked out a hairstyle for her, and when she described what she was thinking, I immediately matched it in my mind with a great drawing by the incredible Ric Quiroz that I'd seen some years ago, and this is the result.

In Ric's picture, the woman saw the "Mermaid Transformation Pool" sign, didn't think it was real, and jumped right in. In this, well, poor thing, she couldn't see the sign under all those bushes. Oh, well, there has to be a cure in these hills somewhere... right? Right?

I'm dedicating this picture to Ric, whose works have inspired me for years, and who is now having a hard time drawing because he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

The lineart was, in total, about six or seven hours of work, and then the coloring part was about another thirteen or fourteen hours, give or take a little bit of wrestling with CorelDRAW.

(This is entirely vector art in CorelDRAW from start to finish, but I had some real headaches trying to export it because of bugs surrounding CorelDRAW 11's implementation of lenses and PowerClips: If you use lenses, you're likely to run into a bit of trouble, and CorelDRAW (and Corel Photo-Paint) crashed several times trying to handle this, mainly because (A) the exported version is incredibly large so that it could be able to be a print, and (B) lenses make CorelDRAW unhappy. So in truth, I exported this as several separate chunks and then overlaid them in Photo-Paint to keep CD's exporter from crashing. But it's still all vector art, and if CD hadn't been so cranky about exporting, I wouldn't have had to do any bitmap work at all.)

And apparently, in addition to liking hiking, Mel's a gamer. Who knew?

I'm well aware of both groups, EVA, and have been members of both for quite some time, despite their recent propensity toward spam. Ric was a master, and well worth honoring with artwork depicting his favorite subjects.

I was mentioning that more for the people who read the comments rather than you specifically... ;)

And don't worry about the spam: I am in there at least once a week, so they don't last long. What those :censored: spammers don't realize is that *I* will not allow Land and Waters to become dead groups even if no one actively participates in them anymore.

(I don't get that- we have over 1k membership in both, and yet no one adds anything new, or comments. :?)

The coloring adds quite a lot to the picture. The style seems to deviate from your past work a bit, but I like it a lot.

It'd be cool is such a spring really existed...

I don't think the style's all that different, but, hey, if you like the picture, I'll buy anything you wanna say :D

And if such a spring really existed, you'd have to fight to get in line behind me and my fiancée to use it ;)

Sound like you'd like the Protectors of the Plot Continuum, Department of Mary Sues, Chronicles of Narnia division. Centaur disguise is rather popular among the Agents therein (and when Agents in other departments are assigned missions to Narnia).

Lovely picture. I like it so much I'm hesitant to comment... shouldn't her tail be a bit farther "to the rear," instead of popping out of her back?

Of course, she may not be quite done changing...

Actually, depends on the breed of horse. Some breeds do have the tail start a little higher, and if you assume she's walking down into the water, her hindquarters would be raised up, so it'd likely show more.

That said, who's to say how the anatomy on a centaur works for certain? Until we find that pool and toss somebody in, I doubt we'll ever really know ;)

I was trying to think of something to put on the T-shirt, and I've done "I:heart:NY" before, and a big smiley face didn't sound too interesting, so I was trolling through T-shirt sites looking for something, and I found one of those. *shrug* I guess she's a Nintendo fan ^_^

I have to ask this because it's always nagged me. When a centaur gets pregnant...where is the baby carried? The human tummy or the horse one? o.O

Yeah but...am I misreading the pic or is her feminine hot spot still between her front legs?

Or wait...that still works. The baby could move forward and...oh bloody hell why am I thinking about this?

Krolak's right. Check out this picture, for example, and look at the muscles between the forelegs: They often form a very characteristic ω shape, which is what you see in this picture.

Heh... believe me, you're not the first person to make that mistake. I've seen suggestions for other things those muscles could be as well, but... they're not. They're simply muscles, nothing more. On an equine, all the fiddly bits are in the back, and I think that applies to centaurs too.

Naga is probably one of the few who use the front and back. Although, I really wonder how they would use it correctly...

Use it incorrectly, I suppose.

I really like Naga's work for the most part, but I'll admit that that part is a little weird for me. That said, I've met women who think having it on both ends would be a great idea, so... *shrug* Guess there's no accounting for taste. But in my mind, the "equipment" is always located at the hindquarters, where it belongs.

If you check your equine anatomy, the horse has a natural muscle group in that position.

FANTASTIC. I'm sure Ric will be please with the tribute.

Actually in his picture the former elfin warrior turned mermaid, had not been paying attention to her lessons in human languages and could not read the warning sign. In another variation on the them, she was thrown from her "war unicorn" who stopped short of the pool sending her flying over head and into the water. A later splash from her and they were reunited as mermaid and hippocampus ready to patrol the deep. At least, they would once someone gets them out of the pool

Well done. :-)

Later on that same day, another hiker strayed across the same spring. Being the entrepreneurial sort, he started to bottle the sparkling spring water. Again, like Melanie, he didn't notice the sign.

Two truck loads of bottled spring water was shipped to a test market. Only after the entrepreneur started to receive strange reports back from the test marketers, did the problem become apparent. By then it was too late...
