I've been inspired in years past by the brilliant fantasy artwork of Boris Vallejo. His characters are beyond lifelike into a realm of almost hyper-real, his paintwork is incredible, and his composition and balance is nearly perfect.

So this is one I've wanted to do for a while: It's not Boris, by any means, but it has some of the "classic fantasy" feel that his pictures have. Cam and Joss are entering a pitched battle, and no-one can know for certain who will be the victor.

I really like how Cam turned out, but I'm not as sold on Joss. Her pose is nearly perfect, and her hair is some of the best big-swooshy straight hair I've ever drawn. Her expression has confidence and nervousness at once, and she looks like she's practiced archery her whole life in preparation for this moment. And then there's Joss. Eh, not so much. Something about his pose is awkward and doesn't quite work, but I can't really put my finger on it. So until I do, these two are gonna have to remain incomplete.

But still, there's something about this I really like. It has that "classic fantasy artwork" feel, and even if it's not Boris, it's still kinda fun.

Let me know what you think! Enjoy!

I agree with Lucius on the stallion's forelegs, but you do portray, neatly, a bit of exuberance and sensitive grace here that characterizes the best of your work. I hope you'll revisit this image. I love seeing your best.

True: what strikes me first are his forelegs. They seem a little flaccid, and need more definition and muscle tension. Beneath the 'knee' joint, the leg should follow the bone structure pretty closely: most of the muscles are in the upper portion and the withers... 7@=e

Overall I really like this (I love Cam's hair and tail), but you asked if something felt off about Joss.

I assume he is rearing? If so, it seems to me that his back is too straight and that his forelegs almost seem to be dangling. Rearing is a very athletic move for a horse and the balance is tricky. Generally they "paw" at the air with their forelegs to help maintain that balance.

I imagine for a centaur it would be even harder - the human torso and head probably weigh more than a horse's head, especially if we're talking about the muscular bodies Boris loves.

He's more leaping than rearing, I think, which is a different pose. I think we may have caught him mid-leap during a gallop, or something like that, which explains his legs' positions.

But still, yes, something about him is off. I'm sorta tempted to delete his head and try redrawing it from scratch and see if that helps.

Boris did a type of art sometimes called 'photocopy' where an artist makes an image look exactly like something they're looking at. Which means his anatomy sometimes got screwy in fantasy creatures - something you haven't had a problem with.

So you're coming at this with a much more technical angle.

hmm, I thought I would look at it for a moment. Then decide if I thought I could sort it out. A second pair of eyes is sometimes the best thing. You know.. It *almost* feels like he's a half size to small for his equine body. Like for some reason it's either the fact he's leaning a bit back or his torso seems a tad short..
