For a moment, he seemed lost in their glow; then he turned, took the tongs, and placed a new log upon them. Orange sparks flew up and then settled and died. A yellow flame began to grow around the log like a leafy vine, and he stared deeply into it.
"Do you know," he said, "how much energy a mage produces? If you are to become a mage, you ought to know such a thing."
